EU plan to provide free fruit and veg to all schoolchildren

THE EUROPEAN Commission has proposed a €90 million scheme that would see free fruit and vegetables provided to schoolchildren across the EU from next year.

If it receives approval from the Council of Ministers and European Parliament, the scheme will be offered to member states, including Ireland, later in the year.

The initiative was announced in Brussels yesterday by Mariann Fischer Boel, commissioner for agriculture and rural development, who said the commission wanted to demonstrate it was serious about taking concrete steps to fight obesity.

On a diet for Summer - or just on the sunny days?

Here in the UK we’ve had several days of constant sunshine (it’s hard to believe I know - but we have honestly). Over these particular hot and sunny days the supermarkets have been packed out with people buying their salad and BBQ ingredients such as bags upon bags of tomatoes, lettuces and cucumbers, but how much will they actually eat and how much will they throw away should the sun go in?

I couldn’t believe my eyes when people were snatching at the lettuces as if there was no tomorrow, but I can guarantee that half of those people have just gone along with the mad rush for them and will now leaving them to rot in their fridge as they probably thought it’s a nice sunny day and I shall start my diet today. Brits ‘under-estimate’ waist size

British people perceive themselves to be much slimmer around the waist than they really are, research shows.
